Sleep Disorders in Stroke Patients: Detections, Clinical Significance and Modern Approaches to Treatment

Yu.V. Flomin

Sleep is of fundamental importance for the optimal functioning of the brain and is a new therapeutic target in many neurological disorders. Sleep disorders are common in neurological diseases and are associated with worse health status and quality of life, increased risk of injury and untimely death. Sleep disorders in patients with stroke include impaired breathing during sleep, insomnia, hypersomnia, circadian and movement disorders. Over recent years there have been achieved major advances in the study of the causes and mechanisms of sleep disorders, but the main therapeutic approaches for obstructive sleep apnea are still devices that provide continuous positive airway pressure, and in insomnia — a combination of cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy and drug treatment.
