Clinical and neurological peculiarities and neuroaminoacid levels in patients with drug-resistant facial sympathalgia

Abstract


We have examined 56 patients with drug-resistant facial sympathalgia, different clinical course and severity of the pain syndrome. Baseline serum levels of glutamate, aspartate and gamma-aminobutyric acid were measured by spectrophotometry to evaluate their influence on the formation and severity of pain syndrome. It was shown that patients with drug-resistant facial sympathalgia and severe pain syndrome had the most significant changes of neuroaminoacid data revealing in high serum level of glutamate and decreased level of inhibitory neuroaminoacids, in particular, gamma-aminobutyric acid compared to controls that could suggest the failure of inhibitory mechanisms in these patients. It is necessary to continue the investigations of neuroaminoacid imbalance in patients with drug-resistant facial sympathalgia to develop differential, diagnostic and prognostic criteria and to search for new treatment options.
