Peculiarities of comorbid pathology in migraine without aura in children and impact of its treatment on the course of disease

Abstract

Background. Migraine is a primary form of headache with high variability and unpredictable incidence of attacks, often accompanied by different comorbid states that influences clinical course of the disease and makes its treatment more difficult. The purpose was to evaluate the incidence and structure of leading neurologic comorbid disorders in migraine without aura in children and to assess the dynamics of attack incidence after therapy. Materials and methods. Patients were divided into two groups depending on the form of disease: group 1 (basic) — migraine without aura (MWOA), group 2 (comparative) — migraine with aura (MWA). MWOA group consisted of 142 patients, MWA — included 96 persons. Results. In MWOA, neurologic comorbid disorders are registered in 77.5 % (110 cases) of patients, which is 2.5 times more frequent than in MWA — 31.2 % subjects (30 cases) (pFisher < 0.001). In all cases of comorbid disorders, there was asthenic syndrome (alone or in combination with other disorders), their treatment (pharmacologic or non-pharmacologic) essentially influenced the course of MWOA, with reduction in the incidence of attacks. Conclusions. Correction of comorbid neurologic disorders in MWOA in children decreases the incidence of attacks (within three control months) that makes this approach useful in the treatment of MWOA in pediatric population.
